Die Not macht erfinderisch.

Nights full of secrets - hallucinations or reality - voices in dreams — pulsing sounds — explosions of colours are lightning the empire of the dark — a trip through the soul of the russian composer and musician Chekalin into the endless wide of the russian landscapes and cultures.

Except for the film music by Eduard Artemyev there has never officially boon any electronic music in Russia. Taking a more careful look at this genre now, and seeing the former as the pioneer of synthesizer music in the 60's and 70's, Mikhail Chekalin turns out to be the underground electronic musician of a young russian "independent"-scene.

His innovative aspect and his role in the context of Russian (the USSR) music culture of the 80s is that he is the first Soviet (Russian) composer extending the field of electronic music up to the very different styles (symphonic, jazz), which is not traditional for electronic music in the 80s; including avanguard, folk, popular ones. M.Chekalin is a pioneer of New Age of the 80s and of a new tradition of philharmonic and polystylistic - eclectic - electronic music in the former USSR, Russia of the 80s-90s. The musical progress of Chekalin (born 1959) is a tightrope walk between solid craft training and deologically imposed restriction of creativity by the Soviet system. At the age often he attended a music school, and then graduated at a music academy and the Gnesin Institute in the subjects piano, composition and choir conducting. His first steps toward musical public were as yet unofficial. It was not until the end of the 1970's that he made his first official appearances as a keyboarder and arranger in rock bands: among others in the well-known group of that time called '"Samozveti" (roughly translated as "Stones").

However the circumstances and the opportunities to perform in public in variety shows and restaurants involved more the replaying of Western pop numbers than the establishment of independent material.

In 1982 he grew tired of this and decided to work as a soloist, and, despite the most unfavourable conditions imabinable. to experiment with electronic instruments. In order to do justice to his artstic demands he became independent of the institutionaly-controled commissioning activities of the official music scene.

As an independent composer he was active in Moscow's underground art scene; for instance with the musical background to exhibitions such as that of the well- known,"Group 20" in the Malaya Gruzinskaya" in the 1980's. Parallel with this, in 1982 he founded together an audio-visual studio for electronic music and light dynamics". Necess ty s the motter of invent on Musical instruments constantly had to be borrowed, even simply stolen for a few hours, to be able to get anything done. A wealth of ideas is everything: with the number "Night Pulsaton" for example all that Mikhail had at his disposal, was Yamaha organ and a harmonizer, but never the less managed to achieved that crazy, iridescent sound. Later his friend S.Dorokhin built special light equipment specifically for Chekalin.

On the one hand this existence was highly adventurous; he had to endure cals from the militia a and questioning by the KGB. On the other hand the multi-media project was never greater demand in Moscow. In addition to performances in the capital's planetarium, there were particularly in the theatres excelent possibilities of giving performances; also in such venues favoured at that time as the "Malaya Bronnaya", MKhAT, "Mineicky & Sesture" and the "Central Children's Theatre", were for the first time in the USSR a piece by the Strugazki brothers was put on, together with laser beam effects.

Chekalin composed music for the most vor ed reasons and occasions: electronic music for children, for the ballet (such as for the internationaly acclaimed ensemble of B.Aifman from Petersburg) break-dance music for the MKhAT school, and special music for psychotherapy on Solovievs neurological clinic and ice-ballet of Igor Bobrin from Moscow, music for TV and cinema and etc...

Official bodies could no longer deny the existence of the young musicians. He was given the opportunity to publish with the Soviet gramophone recording monopoly Melodiya "Vocalise In Rapide" in 1988, his debut album, which contains recordings from 1984 and 1985. In the same year his studio was granted official status. " Glasnost", Gorbatchov and the period rethinking might also have had their effects here.

The album "Post Pop - Non Pop" followed in 1989 with works from the year 1987, and 1991 even a series with 12 LP's. The anthology was effected in cooperation with the M'Ars gallery for contemporary art, and chronologicaly puts on record Chekalin's creative output from 1981 to 1990. The first CD, "Russian Mystery", followed a year later. In his studio work Chekalin places considerable importance on repressing sequencer, playback and multi-track techniques in favour of live recordings. In his compositions he brings out an eclectic philharmonic style.

The selection here represent a cross-section of his works over a period of ten years.
