Faust's studio: Faust, a sculptor, is hard at work in front of a mound of soft clay which shall become a statue. But an artist must have inspiration… One sculpture, another, a third one... Will the love of Margarita or the intoxication of a first success inspire Faust?

The artist works intently. He does not discuss his ideas with Margarita. The quest for perfection takes him far away. They grow apart and in his pursuits he forgets his love for her.

...Margarita, alone, understands that Faust is on the verge of his downfall.

The statue is presented to the public. Calculating and heartless, Mephistopheles communicates with petrified Faust:
- Who are YOU?
- I am YOU.
- It is I who created YOU.
- And now I will create YOU. Your genius does not need anybody except ME. You do not need love. Forget Margarita, and you will become a true and free ARTIST. You will be able to do anything YOU want and anything that I want.

The world of Mephistopheles is evil. In his search of Fame, Power and Pleasure, Faust bargains to sell his soul to Mephistopheles. Margarita tries to save her lover in vein. There is no place for her in his new life. His selfishness kills her love, and then kills Margarita.

Mephistopheles enslaves Faust into serving the EVIL SPIRIT. But Faust is a real ARTIST. In time he understands his own blindness and sees everything.

We are back in the sculptor's studio. Faust is standing in front of the clay. He is a CREATOR. Near him stands Margarita. We could end here. But why does Mephistopheles appear again?!
